Simon O'brien... back in Aus!

Simon's just returned from an awesome trip he's just had in Japan. He dropped me a quick email to let me know how things went....

I'm good, hopefully didn't catch the swine flu and had a great time being with friends and my girl in Japan. Lots of Asahi beer and sushi.... good times!!

I spent just under 2 weeks there, got home yesterday. Already I'm really missing it, the people, style of Japan and shirt weather every day then back home to cold days and freezing nights.... average!

I spent most of the time in Tokyo and travelled north for 2 days to check out some temples and stay in a Japanese style hotel, was awesome, tiring but awesome!!

Overall a pretty relaxed time though. Didn't do too much, a few sights... Odaiba, Asakusa etc. a lot of chilling.

Can't wait for my next Japan trip! :)

Don't forget Simon is also working on the follow up to his phenomenal solo DVD Made You Look, that is due out next year... stay tuned.

Simon O'brien update

Simon is currently over in Japan having a bit of a break. Here's a snippet of what he's been up to courtesy of the guys over at Colony...

OK, I arrived in Japan last Saturday and have so far been having a great time catching up with friends. My girl and Maja and Bashi, 2 street riders I have come to know pretty well from last years Disney gig. I just needed a break from home, having been so busy this year and just thought I’d get away for about 2 weeks. I’m staying in Tokyo or just outside the city in Chiba, pretty much an outer city suburb.

This is the first trip without my bike which is pretty surreal, it’s great not having to lug a big box around but I miss my bike! So been sight seeing a bit and generally just relaxing enjoying the food and what not. On Sunday I’m heading out to West Tokyo for a little street comp which should be fun to be at. I will get back to you on how that goes.

Its great to be over here with some warm weather compared to back home. That's about it so far. Sorry no pics. I will try and get some soon to you and an update on the street comp.

In other Simon O'brien news Fat Tony over at Ride US recently did an article about the Top 10 BMX Videos on YouTube. And you guessed - Simon's video featuring Adelaide's own Hilltop Hoods came in #1 with over 5 million hits... yep, you read that right.

General randoms.... Simon O'Brien & Shane Badman

Simon O'Brien has been spending a lot of time getting his house finished & these before & after shots show that he's not just got the skills on the bike, but he's doing pretty well off it too!!

Simon is going to be heading to Japan shortly for a little break so stay tuned...

Shane Badman had an opportunity to visit Legoland in Denmark over the past weekend. If you ever get the chance to check one of these places out - do it!!

Flatland back in major contests?

Fat Tony from Ride US has written a very interesting article about modern flatland & it's potential to be back in the spotlight with the rest of BMX. With big contests like Ninja Spin & Jomopro is it too far to think that flatland could be included in the Dew Tour???

The last time flatland was in the X-Games it was all Simon O'Brien taking the Gold...

Image thanks to ESPN

In Australia we've been lucky that the BMX Games have always included flatland. Like anything there have always been a few challenges along the way, but judging by the recent contest in January it looks they've got the formula right.

Image thanks to Jason Cho

For the future & growth of flatland - not to mention an opportunity for riders to make a living from riding, I think it would be great to have flatland back alongside the rest of BMX.

Weekly roundup...

Quite a few things happening about the place. Colony head honcho & one time robot flatlander, Clint Millar has a cool segment on FAT BMX & also mentions yours truly & Simon O'Brien.

Speaking of Colony, Simon's signature DejaVu frame will be available from August/September depending on where in the world you are! Is there anticipation or what for that???

In other Simon news, he's coming close to finishing work on his house & will also be heading to Japan for a few weeks at the end of May.

Simon is also working hard on the follow up DVD to Made You Look. He's aiming for a release of early next year - if the riding in MYL is anything to go by, this next video is going to be a straight up masterpiece!!

Realise that this Colony edit has been put up of him sessioning last year, but it's worth checking out again!!

And finally, the big man of West Oz himself, Shaun Jarvis has had the very best of medical technology applied to his elbow. In the words of Shaun himself...

"I just had 40 million cells injected into my elbow today. These cells were cultivated from a very small piece of my patella tendon. The goal is to allow this cells to fix the torn damage in my elbow tendon. Yes, I have been suffering a really bad tennis elbow for the past 8 months & I'm hoping to have it fixed with this research treatment".

Crazy.
